The E-Portfolio

Hi everyone, it’s been a while since my last blog so I thought I’d sit down with a brew for a quick type on the keyboard. There are a few interesting topics that I thought could be good to chat about, but there’s one that seems to have had a more dominant role in my life over the past 9 months than any other: time. At this moment I’m in my last block of my FY1 year and the overriding feeling it’s that it has gone very quickly. Time is certainly not the same entity it was a few years ago. How much time will it take to finish my jobs? When will I find time for lunch today? Will I ever leave this damn building on-time?!?

A Himalayan Elective

Well, 2 weeks into my elective in India I have finally remembered my agreement to write a blog about it. Better late than never I suppose. For my elective block I eventually decided to split it into two blocks of 4 weeks; the first spent at home in Manchester, with the second spent in the Himalayan foothills at Dharamsala, home of the Dalai Lama and many more exiled Tibetans. I had decided to focus both placements on infectious diseases, and try to compare the differences and similarities between UK medicine, and the medicine practiced in a much more resource limited system.

Research request

Hi everyone, Firstly, congratulations to all the other 5th years who have finished their exempting exams. I hope they all went well and you're all enjoying the rest of year 5. Secondly, I am using this blog to help out a friend who is looking to recruit people for her study. She is a fellow University of Manchester student who is doing research on medical student opinions on chronic fatigue syndrome as part of her masters. I will spare you the details but all it involves is a short (about 20 min) interview whenever is convenient for you.

Feedback (Yawn)

How many feedback form requests have you got on Medlea at the moment? You know the ones I mean, the ones asking you to rate the various components of the placement which you have just finished. I personally do try my best to fill them in but so often I find that I’m in too much of a rush, resulting in me either just ignoring it or very quickly selecting an arbitrary mark (4 out of 5 seems to be a frequent answer). Indeed I still have a couple which are probably about 10 months old that I have yet to do.

The Foundation Application...

Well, after very kindly being asked by Tom to start a blog on almostadoctor.com, I was struggling to think what I could write about. After some thought I decided I might as well just write a little bit about something which all final year med students across the country, myself included, are currently dealing with; foundation programme applications. Next Monday (the 11th October) the application form comes online and we are given a little less than 2 weeks to complete the 6 ‘white space’ questions. Whilst there are changes to this process on the horizon, I thought it might be useful for some of the younger students to briefly mention a few of the keys parts of the application and hopefully get other tips from fellow final year students. I know that I personally didn’t really think about the application form itself until towards the end of year 4 and whilst I feel relatively well prepared for it (kind of), I think there are areas of the application which I would have liked to start thinking about a little earlier.
