A 5 month old baby presents to you in the emergency setting at the hospital, at the start of winter. You are the junior doctor on duty and first to see the patient.
They have had a cough and runny nose for 2-3 days, and no recorded fevers. Mum went to the GP two days ago who advised it was probably just the common cold.
Fairly suddenly yesterday afternoon the baby’s breathing became more laboured, and then seems to have been getting gradually worse since.
Baby has not been able to feed this morning.

Immunisations are up to date, baby was born at full term, and there is no significant past medical history.
